Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Welcome to the Special Education Needs and Disabilities section of our website.  All schools have a legal duty to publish information on their websites about the implementation of the governing body’s policy for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.

Here you will find information about the provision that we offer at Winnersh Primary School to support children with special educational needs or disabilities, as well as access to links to documents, reports, workshops and resources.

What are Special Educational Needs and Disabilities?

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, or SEND, is a term that is used to describe pupils who have needs over and above those that can be met by good quality classroom teaching. These needs may be within communication and interaction; cognition and learning; social and emotional health; or sensory and/or physical difficulties. They may be for a short period or throughout a child’s educational life. They may be identified before a child has even entered school or they may come to be recognised at a specific point in their education.

Rainbow Room

Rainbow Room is used by members of the SEND Team to deliver individual and group interventions.  The SENDCo also runs Rainbow Club 4 times a week from 12:30 to 1:00pm to support children who need more structure during their lunchtimes and who benefit from a quieter and calmer environment. Children who need some extra sensory support can use this room whenever they need a sensory break.

Starlight Hub

The Starlight Hub is an additional learning space for children who require extra support and interventions, and a quieter learning environment.

Sensory Circuits

Some children have a variety of sensory issues and the SENDCo and the SEN Learning Support Assistants run Sensory Circuits each morning from 08:30 to 08:45am.  Sensory Circuits help the children’s bodies and minds to become more alert and awake.  It is a great way to prepare them for the start of their school day.  It also encourages independence as the children take ownership of their own individual visual programme.

Nuture Room

Our Nurture Room is used to deliver Nurture programmes for children needing some extra emotional support.  It is also used for Speech and Language Therapy and members of the SEND Team deliver both 1:1 and group work in here.
